How often should I check my carbon monoxide detector?

Test carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace batteries or the unit as recommended by the manufacturer — usually every 5-10 years.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Maintenance

Carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless and colourless, making a working detector essential in any home with gas appliances.

Recommended Checks

  • Test the alarm monthly using the test button
  • Replace batteries as per manufacturer guidance (or immediately if the low-battery warning sounds)
  • Replace the entire unit every 5–10 years, or as specified by the manufacturer — sensors degrade over time

Where to Install

CO detectors should be placed in rooms with gas appliances (boiler, gas hob, gas fire) and near bedrooms, at head height or as per manufacturer instructions.

RARE checks CO detector placement and function as part of every annual boiler service. Call 020 7458 4949 if you don't currently have one fitted.
