What is a stopcock and why should I know where mine is?
A stopcock shuts off your home's entire water supply — knowing its location and testing it annually can prevent major flood damage during a burst pipe.
Why Your Stopcock Matters
The stopcock (or stop tap) controls the mains water supply into your property. In an emergency — a burst pipe, major leak, or before you go on holiday — turning it off stops water damage from escalating.
Where to Find It
Most commonly located:
- Under the kitchen sink
- In a utility room or cupboard near the front of the house
- In a basement or cellar in period London properties
- Occasionally in an external stopcock box on the pavement (this is the water company's responsibility)
Test It Annually
Stopcocks can seize up from disuse. Turn yours off and on once a year to make sure it works when you need it. If it's stiff or won't turn, ask RARE to replace it before it becomes an emergency.
