What We Fix

Shower and tap faults we repair every week.

Most are cartridge or O-ring repairs — diagnosed accurately and resolved in a single visit when parts are on hand.

Dripping tap — ceramic disc failure

The most common fault across all mixer taps. Ceramic disc cartridge worn or cracked. Usually repaired without disturbing the fitting externally.

Thermostatic shower not holding temperature

Wax thermostatic cartridge degraded. Replacement and recalibration restores precise temperature control. Brand-specific cartridges sourced as required.

Shower head flow restricted or blocked

Limescale build-up in the shower head aerator or flow restrictor — common in London's hard water areas. Descaled or replaced on the same visit.

Lever handle stiff or loose

Worn handle grub screw, corroded indexing pin, or degraded O-rings on the cartridge stem. Diagnosed and repaired without replacing the fitting.

Hot or cold water not isolated correctly

Mixing valve imbalance — usually caused by cartridge wear or pressure differential. Requires cartridge replacement and flow balancing.

Shower diverter stuck or not switching

Diverter cartridge or O-rings worn. Common in multi-function showers with separate body spray or overhead circuits. Repaired in a single visit in most cases.

Concealed valve leaking behind trim plate

Body O-ring or cartridge seal failure. Valve accessed through the trim plate — in most cases without tiling disruption.

Antique or vintage tap leaking at the base

Packing gland failure on period pillar taps. Traditional packing material replaced or re-packed. Proprietary to vintage/antique fittings — our engineers carry appropriate materials.

Why It Matters

Most plumbers won't touch a Dornbracht. We do.

A dripping Dornbracht tap or a failing THG Paris thermostatic shower is not the same problem as a dripping kitchen tap. The fittings cost £500–£5,000 and more. The finishes — brushed gold, polished nickel, PVD black, lacquered brass — scratch irreparably if touched with the wrong tool. And the cartridges are brand-specific, often requiring direct sourcing from the manufacturer's UK distributor.

Most plumbers decline this work because they don't know the brands and don't have the parts. RARE's engineers work regularly in London's finest bathrooms — from Mayfair townhouses fitted with Dornbracht to Hampstead villas with Lefroy Brooks bar valves and Notting Hill apartments with Hansgrohe iBox concealed systems. This is the kind of specialist knowledge that only comes from doing the work.

  • Padded tools used on all plated and decorated surfaces
  • Brand-specific cartridges sourced — no generic substitutions on precision fittings
  • Correct disassembly sequence verified before work begins on unusual fittings
  • Imperial thread and US-specification repair capability for vintage and American fittings
  • No unnecessary tile or surface removal — access through the fitting itself where possible
  • Post-repair temperature calibration on all thermostatic valves

The Brands We Repair

Specialist knowledge by brand.

Every luxury bathroom fitting brand is different. Here's what you need to know about repairs for the brands we encounter most frequently in London's prime properties.

Dornbracht

Germany

Dornbracht is widely regarded as the definitive premium bathroom fitting manufacturer. Their fittings are found throughout Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge — particularly the Tara, IMO and Lulu collections. Dornbracht use high-quality ceramic cartridges and precision thermostatic valves that perform exceptionally well when correctly maintained.

Common repairs:

Tara mixer cartridge replacement IMO thermostatic shower cartridge Lulu lever handle O-ring Dornbracht concealed valve service

THG Paris

France

THG Paris represent the pinnacle of French bathroom craftsmanship — handcrafted fittings in precious metals, crystal and porcelain produced for properties where the bathroom is a design statement. Their fittings require careful handling and brand-specific replacement components.

Common repairs:

THG ceramic cartridge replacement Lever handle tightening and indexing THG thermostatic valve service Crystal handle re-seating

Lefroy Brooks

UK

Lefroy Brooks are a British heritage brand producing classic, period-inspired bathroom fittings favoured across London's Georgian and Victorian townhouses and Edwardian mansion flats. Their exposed thermostatic bar valves and traditional mixer taps are a common feature in Hampstead, Notting Hill and Marylebone properties.

Common repairs:

Thermostatic bar valve cartridge Pillar tap re-packing Concealed shower valve service Classic mixer cartridge replacement

Samuel Heath

UK

Samuel Heath are a Birmingham-based British manufacturer with over 170 years of history producing solid brass bathroom fittings. Found throughout London's period townhouses and high-spec refurbishments, their fittings are machined to tight tolerances and finished in chrome, nickel, gold and custom platings — each requiring appropriate tool protection.

Common repairs:

Mixer tap cartridge replacement Shower valve service & recalibration Lever handle O-ring replacement Exposed bar valve thermostatic cartridge

Vola

Denmark

Vola are a Danish design-led brand whose minimalist, exposed pipework systems and mixer taps are found in architecturally significant London properties. Vola's fittings use a distinctive modular construction — the handle, body and cartridge are separate components — which requires familiarity with their assembly before any disassembly can be safely undertaken.

Common repairs:

Vola mixer cartridge replacement Modular handle and body re-assembly Thermostatic shower valve service Exposed pipework fitting repair

Barber Wilsons

UK

Barber Wilsons — trading as Barber Wilson & Co. since 1898 — are one of Britain's oldest bathroom fitting manufacturers, still producing fittings in their Enfield factory. Their traditional pillar taps, bib cocks and period-style fittings are a hallmark of London's finest period bathrooms. Many Barber Wilsons fittings use traditional packing and gland construction rather than ceramic cartridges.

Common repairs:

Traditional packing gland re-packing Pillar tap service & washer replacement Bib cock repair Period shower fitting restoration

Axor

Germany

Axor is Hansgrohe's premium design collection — collaborations with Philippe Starck, Antonio Citterio and Patricia Urquiola. Axor fittings are found throughout London's contemporary luxury apartments and newly refurbished properties. They use Hansgrohe-compatible cartridges in most cases, but the precision-finished trim components require careful handling.

Common repairs:

Axor Starck cartridge replacement Axor Citterio thermostatic valve service Concealed Axor shower system repair Trim plate and handle re-seating

Hansgrohe

Germany

Hansgrohe are one of the world's leading bathroom fitting manufacturers — a specification-grade brand found in London properties at every level from high-end new builds to luxury hotel-style refurbishments. Hansgrohe fittings use well-supported ceramic cartridges and iBox concealed valve systems. The iBox concealed system requires specific knowledge to service correctly.

Common repairs:

iBox concealed valve cartridge replacement Raindance shower head descale & service Thermostatic shower valve recalibration Mixer tap ceramic disc replacement

The Water Monopoly

UK

The Water Monopoly specialise in reclaimed, antique and vintage bathroom fittings — original Victorian and Edwardian cast iron baths, reclaimed taps and period shower fittings. These pieces are irreplaceable and require engineers who understand imperial thread sizes, traditional packing materials and the specific construction of Victorian-era plumbing fittings.

Common repairs:

Vintage tap packing gland repair Imperial thread fitting repair Antique shower valve service Period pillar tap restoration

Waterworks

USA

Waterworks is the defining American premium bathroom brand, widely specified in London properties by designers working with American clients. Waterworks fittings use US-specification thread standards and American-format cartridges — they cannot simply be repaired with UK-specification parts, and require an engineer who understands the differences.

Common repairs:

Waterworks cartridge sourcing & replacement US-thread fitting repair Easton and Henry collection valve service Concealed Waterworks shower valve

London Hard Water

Why London's hard water is harder on luxury fittings.

London's mains water is among the hardest in the UK — typically 280–320mg/l calcium carbonate. This level of hardness causes limescale to accumulate inside cartridges, shower heads, flow restrictors and thermostatic valves much faster than in softer water areas. The result is reduced flow, imprecise temperature control, and — eventually — cartridge failure.

For a Dornbracht thermostatic shower system, a Hansgrohe iBox valve or a THG Paris concealed mixer, limescale build-up is a significant problem — because the precision-toleranced components inside these fittings are more sensitive to the abrasive effects of scale than the broad-tolerance components in standard fittings.

Our engineers descale as part of every cartridge replacement, and we recommend annual preventative servicing for high-value fittings in London properties — particularly those without a water softener.

Preventative servicing — what we recommend

  • Annual cartridge inspection

Check ceramic discs for wear before they cause a drip. £50–£90 per fitting, depending on brand.

  • Thermostatic valve recalibration

Temperature accuracy degrades over time. Annual recalibration maintains precise control and prevents scalding risk.

  • Shower head descale or replacement

Flow restrictors and shower head internals descaled annually in hard water areas. Prevents jet blockage and maintains pressure.

  • Water softener installation

A whole-house water softener dramatically reduces cartridge wear rate. Our engineers install and maintain water softener systems.
