Low Water Pressure London — Causes, Signs & Fixes
Low water pressure in London is usually caused by a partially closed stop tap, corroded galvanised pipework, a faulty pressure-reducing valve, or an air lock. Check your mains stop tap is fully open and ask Thames Water about supply issues in your area. If the problem persists, a plumber diagnoses whether it's a mains or internal issue.
Poor water pressure at taps and showers is one of the most disruptive plumbing problems. Whether it affects one tap or the whole property, there's always a diagnosable cause — and usually a same-day fix.
Common causes
Partially closed stop tap
The most overlooked cause. The mains stop tap under the kitchen sink or in the street may have been partially closed during previous work and never fully reopened. Worth checking before calling.
Limescale in pipes or fittings
London's hard water creates limescale deposits that progressively narrow pipes and restrict flow, particularly in older copper pipework and at tap aerators.
Faulty or undersized pressure reducing valve
Most modern London properties have a PRV on the mains supply. If it fails or is set too low, it restricts incoming pressure to the entire property.
Corroded or undersized pipework
Galvanised steel pipes (common in Victorian properties) corrode internally, reducing bore diameter over decades. Often manifests as adequate pressure that worsens progressively.
Shared mains supply issue
In flats with a shared rising main, high demand from multiple units reduces available pressure to individual apartments — most noticeable in the morning and evening.
Water company network pressure

What is normal water pressure in a London house?
Thames Water aims to provide at least 1 bar (10m head) at the mains. Most properties see 2 to 4 bar at the stopcock. Comfortable shower pressure requires at least 1.5 bar at the showerhead.
Can I fix low water pressure myself?
Check: 1) mains stopcock is fully open, 2) tap aerators are clean (unscrew and rinse), 3) check neighbours for same issue. Beyond this, a plumber should inspect the PRV and pipework.
Why is my shower pressure fine but my taps are weak?
Your shower may have a pressure-boosting pump built in. Taps rely on direct mains or tank pressure. This often indicates a supply pressure problem upstream of the taps.
